During his 29 years as a state trooper, Buntin made regular, compulsory contributions to the Virginia Supplemental Retirement System. He retired from the state police in 1975 and immediately began drawing benefits of $541.37 per month, the suit notes.
The benefits were terminated after seven months on January 1, 1976, when he assumed duties as Sheriff of Rappahannock following his election to that post the previous November.
