According to Durrette, a proposal on uniform sentencing from Marshall Coleman, now attorney general and Republican candidate for governor, would narrow the number of years which could be given for specific categories of offenses.
For example, Durrette said, penalty for a class three felony, such as breaking and entering, would be eight to 12 years instead of the current five to 20 years. Sentence would be served without parole but possibly with time off for good behavior, he said. A greater or lesser sentence could be imposed with justification in writing in accord with specific criteria, Durrette explained.
He told the court house audience that, in principle, he supported Coleman’s minimum sentencing proposal, differing with the Republican gubernatorial candidate only on a few of the numbers in the plan.
