The secret was out and the punishment was as merciless as the sword stroke of a dragon fighter. And as painful, judging by the hurt looks when the D&D supplies disappeared into the closet until grades began to inch back up.

The game's attraction in legendary. D&D mothers tell of teenaged boys playing bleary eyed until the wee hours of the morning only to rise with the sun, bloodshot and beat, for another assault on the dungeon. Stomachs rumble ominously as youngsters who normally attack an icebox like a horde of locusts forego food rather than risk a break in the action. It's easy to spot D&D addicts, at least in the summer time. They’re the kids who are three or four shades lighter than last year when they spent their vacation dolling around the pool or sweating on a baseball diamond.

What's the lure that has captured so many young people?
