Crime Deterrent
Uniform sentencing will "eliminate or diminish substantially” the uncertainty and lack of predictability in punishment and will thus serve as a deterrent to crime, according to Durrette.
So often in Virginia, length and severity of sentence depends on “who you are, who you know, who the judge is, who your lawyer is,” the Republican candidate said.
In particular, he cited drug cases where for the same crime, one defendant will receive 15 years in prison while the second gets only a suspended sentence. Durrette maintained that minimum mandatory sentences and uniform sentencing will help eliminate this disparity.
He also hit upon another favorite Republican target, the method Virginia uses to fill courtroom benches.
