What redblooded American boy — and boys are the chief addicts of the game — wants to spend hours memorizing the table of periodic elements for chemistry class when he can master the intricacies of a new D&D dungeon instead? Who wants to learn irregular French verbs when there’s a monster manual on the desk with pages and pages of information on the weaknesses of creatures he’ll have to face climbing the White Plume Mountains?
Not my kids. We watched grades plummet, mystified by the sudden lack of academic success. First to go were TV privileges, next came soccer, telephone rights, overnight guests, after-school basketball and weekend outings. We pulled out all the stops but to no avail. The grades stayed low and family tensions stayed high. There were a few puzzles, however. The kids, always quick to grumble and pout over restrictions, skipped up the steps to the bedroom with smiles on their faces, eager to hit the books. Or so we supposed. A surprise raid uncovered a new dungeon in progress between the pages of a world history text and a dungeon master's manual hidden in a math book.
