Rappahannock has the most expensive local government and the cheapest schools of the five jurisdictions in the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District, according to the report of the Auditor of Public Accounts on Comparative Cost of County Government for the year ended June 30, 1980.
Rappahannock citizens paid $94.92 per capita in 1979-80 fiscal year for operation and maintenance of a general government which serves a population of 6,093 over an area of 267 square miles.
By comparison, Madison ranked at the bottom of the list with a per capita cost of $84.93 for local government (population 10,232; 327 square miles)
