“Everybody’s going to hit the ball somewhere,” Maury Nichols agreed.
“Sometimes,” added Welch, still grinning.
The camaraderie the men share is evident as they banter back and forth. This friendship is the secret behind their phenomenal record, according to Foster.
‘‘It’s a family,” he explained, borrowing a line from the Pittsburgh Pirates whose “We are Family” theme song took them to the world championship.
“You wouldn’t believe the feelings on this team," Foster continued. “We’ve yet to have a cross word amongst our players. They have heart and dedication. They go on the field to win and they do it together... We all stick together. There’s no conflict at all. And we spend a whole lot of time together off the field. That’s what’s won games for us — sticking together.”
