Close Encounter
For Third Time
The third of a rare triple conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn occurs on July 30, according to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger, Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia.
Jupiter will pass within 1.2 degrees south of Saturn marking the third and final encounter between the planets this year. Twice before, on January 14 and February 19, Jupiter passed within 1.1 degree south of Saturn as viewed from the earth.
“A conjunction occurs when any two planets appear to align, or closely pass one another,” Dr. Knappenberger explained. The last triple conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn occurred in 1941 and it will be 2238, another 250 years, before this astronomical rarity occurs again.
Both Jupiter and Saturn can be seen low in the southwest, in the constellation of Virgo, through the end of August. Jupiter is the brighter of the planet pair.
