Rappahannock County can boast of one of the lowest crime rates in Virginia, a rate that is declining while crime is on the increase elsewhere in the state, according to statistics released by the Uniform Crime Reporting Section of the Department of State Police.
For 1981, the crime rate in Rappahannock was 11.48 pier 1,000 population, a drop from the previous year’s 17.16 rate pier 1,000.
Offenses counted in that Figure include murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft, all term serious crimes by the Reporting Section.
In 1981, the county had one rape, three assaults, 49 burglaries and 17 larcenies. By comparison in 1980, Rappahannock had one murder or manslaughter, one robbery, three assaults, 44 burglaries, 50 larcenies and four motor vehicle thefts.
The average crime rate in 1981 for all of Virginia’s 95 counties was 32.22 per 1,000 population while the rate for independent cities was even higher at 70.56 pier 1,000.
