136 counties and independent cities had a lower crime rate for 1981.
The county’s 11.48 rate per 1,000 was the lowest in the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District. By comparison, the serious crime rate per 1,000 population in Culpeper was 29.26; in Fauquier 22.76; in Madison 23.06 and in Orange 23.72. Of the four only Orange showed a decline over the previous year.
Clearance Rate Up
In the one year period, the percent of crimes cleared or solved in Rappahannock jumped from 15.5 percent in 1980 to 21.4 percent in 1981. Of the total for 1981, the county sheriff's office was credited with a clearance rate of 23.7 percent and the state police with nine percent.
Although Rappahannock's clearance record has improved, it still lagged behind the other counties in the planning district with Culpeper reporting 37.4 percent of all serious crimes cleared; Fauquier 35.1 percent and Orange 33 percent. Only Madison had a lower rate with 18.20 percent of index offenses cleared.
Of the 253,437 serious crimes in the state, 23.6 percent of the offenses were cleared, according to the crime report.
