Beginning Aug. 1, defendants convicted of minor misdemeanors, such as bad checks and petty larceny, in Planning District Nine general district courts, may be placed in a new community service work program rather than being jailed andor fined.
To be known as the Battlefield Diversionary Program, the new effort will give PD9’s three district court judges the option of sentencing a misdemeant to a specified number of hours of community serVice work under court supervision.
Among the goals of the program are to help reduce an already overcrowded jail situation in the five counties, help provide the community with capable workers in useful jobs, provide a meanginful form of punishment of lieu of jail sentences, and help collect misdemeanor fines through
