It does black youngsters no discredit to say that many of them are the products of generations of social and economic deprivation, and in many cases, these deprivations continue.
Until a couple of decades ago. a black family's top priority had to be survival in a segregated and whitedominated society. If a young black thought of advancement, that society often turned hostile.
There was not much opportunity or incentive in those days for black parents to instill in their children the need to prepare themselves for a rigorous education. Many did. of course, but many more did not.
With the coming of the civil rights legislation and desegregation decisions of the 1960s, all that changed. Prodded by the federal government, the nation became involved in a massive game of catch-up ball in an effort to erase three and a half centuries of discriminatory public policy.
