Special guided hikes to Camp Hoover will leave from the visitor center at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Participants must be prepared to walk over 3 miles to the Camp and are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes. Hikers can hike back to the visitor center on their own or return on one of the buses. Independent hikers can reach t’ Camp by using any of several trails.
President Hoover purchased the land for the Camp in 1929 and used the area, then called “Camp Rapidan,” as a weekend retreat or "Summer White House” during his term of office. It was here that the President met with then British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald for private talks which led to the Naval Limitation Treaty of 1930. At the end of his term, Mr. Hoover donated the land to become part of Shenandoah National Park, with the provision that the Camp be available to his successors for use as a Presidential retreat.
