murders reported in Virginia, up from 455 the previous year. Of these offenses 79.8 percent were cleared. An alaysis by month shows March had the greatest occurance and April and October the least.
According to the Uniform Crime Report, "murder - non-negligent manslaughter is largely a societal problem which is beyond the control of the police. The relationship of the victim to the offender and the circumstances of murder serve to emphasize this point.”
Statistics included in the report show that only 12 percent of the murders in Virginia in 1981 were committed by persons who were strangers to the victim. In 37.4 percent of the cases, the victim was an acquaintance; in 11.7 percent of the cases a spouse; 5.2 percent a boyfriend or girlfriend; 5.0 percent a parent or child; 6.3 percent another family member and 22.4 percent the relationship was unknown.
Circumstances involved in last year’s 461 murders induced lover’s triangle (two percent), influence of alcohol or drugs (6.3 percent), felony (11.2 percent), argument over money (two percent), other arguments (39.1 percent), other known circumstances (18.7 percent) and undetermined (20.7 percent).
