He said if I could hear her groans and sighs I certainly would abandon my ways. It went as a daggar to my heart. 1 made then a solemn vow to God that 1 would never be caught in such acts again which in most part I kept, but still continued at times to use profane language.
It would appear to many from day to day that 1 had sinned the day of grace aw ay. I felt that l had slaughtered the advice of the kindest and best of mothers. All these troubles 1 kept to myself. When any of my friends would talk to me on the subject of religion, I would answer them in the most abrupt manner. 1 often told them religion was a humbug: 1 told them I had as much religion as any of them, and I would not give my chance for theirs, but 1 did not believe what I said.
