Rappahannock tenth graders out-performed their classmates around the state on minimum competency testing in mathematics, with 97.9 percent of sophomores passing the math exam given last March compared to a 94.4 percent passing rate for Virginia students as a whole.
On the reading portion of the competency tests, 95.8 percent of the county’s tenth graders posted a passing grade compared to a slightly higher 96.2 percentage statewide.
Almost 93 percent of all tenth graders in Virginia who took math and reading tests passed both; in Rappahannock, 95.7 percent of tenth grade students taking the two tests passed both.
This year’s minimum competency test results for the state as a whole have dropped. The 93 percent of 64,436 tenth graders passing both tests represents a 1.7 percent decline from last year. The percentage passing reading this year represents a slight improvement, .9 percent over the 1981 level, which is more than offset by a three percent drop in the percentage of students passing the mathematics portion of the competency tests.
