Winter settled upon the northern hemisphere on Tuesday, December 21, at 11:39 p.m. EST when the sun reached (he southernmost point in its annual journey standing directly above the Tropic of Capricorn.
According to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia, on the First day of winter, the earth’s noth pole is tipped as far away from the sun as possible. ‘‘This means that the sun will be above the horizon for the shortest amount of time this year,” Knappenberger explained.
On this day also, the sun will trace its lowest path across the sky. At the Arctic circle the sun will just touch the horizon at high noon and the night will be 20 hours long while at the north pole, the sun will remain beneath the horizon for another three months as the long Arctic night continues.
