One Sperryville fire fighter reported that an oil stove was situated in the portion of the building where the fire appeared to have originated. "But it was so badlv burned on the inside, it was hard to tell how it started," the fireman said. Another squad member described the cause of the fire as a "mystery.”
In addition to damaging the building. the fire reportedly wiped out the store’s inventory. Special agent Roger Broadbent of the state police arson unit in Culpeper is in charge of the investigation.
