In the South, beloved Swedish singer Jcnpy Lind found a Christmas tree erected in her honor when she arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, at Chrismas time in 1850. In Mississippi, the tree was introduced in the Vicksburg area by Mrs. Janies Roach, a niece of Jefferson Davis, who had a tree for her children in 1851. Mrs. Roach said in her diary that she had never seen a Christmas tree but had learned about the custom from some German stories she had been reading.
For decoration on early trees: wax tapers, baskets of sugarplums, gilded egg cups, paper cornucopias filled with sweets, corn shuck dolls, and bits^if silver paper. 'In remote settlements, pioneers made ornaments and toys from materials gathered in the woods and fields. A new pair of mittens or socks was a precious gift when women had to spin and dye yarn before knitting it. Women fashioned dolls of cornshucks or used bits of calico. Gingerbread cookies, pine cones and nuts completed the decoration of this homespun tree.
