Christmas day was the time for a feast. In Alberta's family it was traditional to serve Cappalletti, a pumpkinstuffed pastry cooked in chicken broth, followed by grouse with a chestnut and white grape stuffing.
Willie's family always had lobster, brought back by his father from his business by the sea. They both remember the same traditional dessert.
"We always served pampepata." Willie said. "This is a chocolate fruit cake far too rich to digest," he laughed.
Nevertheless, Italian families continue to serve this sweet, along with fine chocolates, torroni, a nougat candy, and candied chestnuts and violets.
In Milan and Rome, it is traditional for the shepherds to come down from the mountains and play their bagpipes in the streets for the entertainment of the city people. In the mountains there will be snow and also in the north. Alberta and Willy said, but in the piedmont region it's likely to be rainy and cool on Christmas.
