7 quarts water
Dissolve soda in water. Put 2 lbs. of dried cod in large container with plenty of water, and soak for 8 days, changing the water once or twice daily. Remove from water. Soak in the lye solution for another 2 to 3 days until soft. Remove fish from the solution and soak in water for two more days, changing water twice daily. The job is done - except to bake or boil as desired. Serve hot with melted butter, cheese, and lefse.
