In Italy. Christmas retains its family and religious orientation. Christmas decorating centers around the manger scene, and many Italian families have nativity figures handed down and treasured for generations.
Alberta and Willie Zucco, residents of Washington, aid that in Milan, the season of winter celebration starts in early December, when the opera house opens on the feast day of St. Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan. Winter markets open throughout the city, selling special pastry, candies and cookies for the holidays.
In addition to the nativity scenes, many families also have Christmas trees, decorated as we would with glass ornaments. Both Alberta and Willy remember their parents using real candles on the tree.
