Defensive driving by Virginians can make this the safest Fourth of July on record, according to the VirLast
year in Virginia, the three-day July 4 weekend claimed the lives of 10 motorists. June, July and August—when road conditions are best—account for some 40 percent of all highway crashes.
Mores than 80 percent of those crashes are caused by human error, DMV reports.
Driving distances on expressways requires special skills. DMV suggests motorists: Accelerate to highway speed on expressway on-ramps; avoid sudden stops or backing; check blind spots and signal before changing lanes; allow lots of space between your car and the vehicle ahead; know in advance what exit to take.
