• Said small family farmers have told her they are having problems and that government programs are primarily helping the “corporate farmer.”
Harrison’s political background reflects the spirit of non-tradition. She notes that she ran for the Norfolk Democratic Committee in the late 1950s, at a time when that tradition of Virginia politics, the Byrd machine, was in power.
Her literature also says that in the 1960s, she worked on city committees to increase voter registration and to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to issue its oneperson, one-vote ruling —issues largely affecting poor and minority voters.
She was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1979, serving three years as a state legislator and serving on the Education, Labor and Commerce, Conservation and Natural Resources, and Chesapeake and its Tributaries committees.
She lists as her major legislative achievements work to improve vocationaltechnical career education, a paternity bill that allowed the use of blood grouping tests to be used as legal evidence to prove paternity, and a bill changing the consent form of breast cancer patients, requiring a patient’s signature for a biopsy or masectomy.
