Clarence Baldwin, who spoke in favor of the funding, opposed the motion, and downplayed the precedent. “Just because you give one child a sucker doesn’t mean they all deserve one,” he quipped.
• $1,500 was chipped from proposed funding to staff a Soil and Water Conservation secretary. The motion reduced to $1,000 an original request for $2,500.
• $600 was deleted from a library request for $2,600 in additional funding. During a vote, none of the supervisors was opposed to the cut.
A few items on the agenda caused major discussion during the meeting.
Supervisors debated whether the addition scheduled for the high school should be of brick and mortar or metal construction.
Lane kicked off the conversation, voicing strong opposition to brick and mortar construction.
Lane argued that the difference in masonry, compared to metal, was negligible. He said that masonry wasn’t needed. “We don’t have the ability to see 50 years ahead,” Lane commented.
He then argued cost: “We’ll reduce the amount of the literary loan by at least one-half million (dollars),” he maintained.
