In light of the media headlines highlighting the stressful competition in other communities, Woodward emphasized that in the RAA the competition and desire to win is generated by the kids, not by the parents. To his knowledge, there are no parents in Rappahannock who stress competition.
If anything, Woodard explains, the parents involved tend to deemphasize competition and mainly emphasize the fellowship, team participation and learning of skills.
