The pendulum that times the moods and attitudes of America’s youth is swinging toward traditional national values, a survey of young people’s opinions indicates.
This study demonstrated that the country’s youth is sharing adult concerns about major issues, such as nuclear warfare. Such findings offer sharp contrast to the postures of teenagers in the 1960s and ’70s which were marked by strident and rebellious approaches to national affairs. The survey was based on responses from 986 students aged 13 to 18 across the country.
The Stars and Stripes beam a signal of unity of 230 million free people welded into a nation, one and inseparable, united not only in a community of interests but by a vital unit of sentiment and purpose; a nation distinguished for the clear individual conception of its citizens alike of their duties and their privileges as well as their rights and obligations.
Congress has recognized the special intent of honoring America by seting aside the 21-day period from Flag Day to Independence Day, July 4, as a time for examining our country’s problems and considering what contributions we can make to help solve them.
This time span, selected to correspond to the traditional 21-gun salute accorded to heads of state, was initiated by the Honor America committee of the American Historic and Cultural Society and won hearty acceptance by Congress.
The Honor America group, a private, non-partisan organization, has been functioning since 1970 in stimulating a patriotic spirit through the mediapress, radio, television, films—and separate historic and educational groups. Now, this year, the federal government has created and fiinded the national Endowment for Democracy to advance the cause of freedom and independence on an international basis. Thus, the impetus introduced by the Honor America effort is gaining momentum.
The survey of young peoples’ views showed the majority agree with their parents’ position on such subjects as drugs, education, politics and sex. Have the adults conscientiously thought out the answers to the problems related to these issues?
