For another, public school students in elementary grades will begin to learn computer skills early next year—thanks to eight new computers bought recently by the county, as well as ssuayal computer study outlines draw* up by a committee earlier this year.

The new machines join 10 other computers in use at Rappahannock County High School for the past four years.

“Initially, computer instruction at the high school will remain basically intact” according to a report prepared by the Computer Literacy Planning Committee earlier this summer. The report also recommended a course in advanced computer programming “in at least two languages—BASIC and probably PASCAL—maybe (sic) touch on FORTRAN or COBOL..

Estabrook said computer education “will be a major point of emphasis” in Rappahannock public schools this year, .yi „ . .

“Certainly, the way society operates now, we feel computer literacy is vital to people these days,” he said.

The county superintendent of schools said Rappahannock’s computer education program differed from “fine programs in other school districts” which he said were flawed because the districts “jumped on the computer bandwagon early.
