To the editor.
Because of a sudden attack, I was unable to attend last Wednesday’s meeting on the new Zoning Ordinance. I was, however, well briefed in the proceedings, and would like to make a few comments.
I. The intelligent compromise of conflicting interests is the bedrock of both good government and a congenial community.
The proposed ordinance may need more citizen input and, following that, constructive changes before it is finally adopted. But we most certainly need a zoning ordinance if we are to have a true community, in which all of our special interests are harmonized for the general good.
To attack the proposed ordinance in its entirety, as distinguished from offering thoughtful, constructive changes, is destructive. If we have no ordinance, Rappahannock County will in time become a jungle of strip and spot development. Taxes will rise and property values will fall. We will cease to be the essentially congenial rural community we now are.
II. There should be no uses permitted by right if such uses affect the public.
It was suggested at the meeting that Churches should be permitted by right. I disagree.
