The Rappahannock Players’ choice to present three original one-act plays won an enthusiastic response from the audience at last Friday night’s production at the Gay Street Theatre.
Randy Moomaw’s “Beacheads,” directed by E. P. Palmer, is a sharpwitted, suddenly vulnerable dialogue between a woman and a man on a beach at 3 a.m. Toni Came vale and Tom Simpson played all the humor the script offered and created two characters, and a couple, that we laughed with and cared about. Though some of the hard beats at the end just missed their timing, the two found serious moments that were equally effective.
The second play, a work-in-progress titled “Unfinished Business,” is an endearing portrait of the sisters of a close-knit mountain family. Catherine Kiley, Valerie Bayne, Jeanne Drevas, and Laurie Marshall, with her son Jeremy, worked out this sketch from improvisations based on Riley’s collection of oral histories by mountain women. While it is early in this play’s development, it has a good, strong story and all four actresses draw clear characters. They show a good sense of ensemble work. It seems a solid start.
