tions with next year’s elections, the similarities between the Virginians in Dallas and those in San Francisco come to an abrupt halt.

In San Francisco the Democrats tied themselves in knots in their efforts to recognize and accommodate every conceivable division of the human estate. Egalitarianism ruled, and heaven help the party leader who refused to pay respectful attention to the “input” of the myriad constituent groups. Each had its own agenda which it wished the convention to address.

The Republicans labor under no such compulsions.

In a social sense, there are no Republican constituent groups. Those who make up the power blocs in the Democratic party, such as Blacks and Hispanics, are represented in the GOP by scattered individuals or small caucuses which are little noted and even less heeded.

Thus the Republicans in Dallas are free to concentrate on what they regard as their natural role in the order of things. That is the role of economic royalists, as FDR called them, who see themselve as predestined to lead the riff-raff out of 50 years of wandering in the Democratic wilderness. It is a role in which they feel comfortable and supremely confident.
