A little after 6 p.m. most weeknights, a dozen or so young joggers trot past Rappahannock County High School on to Route 211, from which they continue a seven-mile pace taking them past Gid Brown Hollow—before returning to RCHS inside a pickup truck.
“We’re just trying to get in shape a little bit,” said Ann Spieker, coach of the high school’s cross country team. “So far, we’re not too bad off.”
Neither was last year’s performance, a first-place Bull Run District record of 12-1 in regular season action, plus a third-place finish in the ‘A’ state cross country championship out of 24 competing schools.
But the Panthers’ ‘A’ state win was led by Scott Keithley’s fourth place finish in the championship race. Keithley graduated last spring, as did Chris Caperton, Craig Kenyon and David Dodson—four of Rappahannock’s strongest runners last season.
Rebuilding Year
“Five of our top seven guys graduated last year” said Spieker, who added that much of her team this season consists of freshmen and sophomores.
“We’re going to be rebuilding this year,” she added.
