their third place championship mark this season, Spieker said, they would have to overcome a strong Strasburg effort and an improving Stonewall Jackson team.
“Jackson was a young team last year,” she said. “They may be comfortable for us to compete against.”
She added that roster rebuilding at several schools—including defending ‘A’ state champion Buffalo Gap— could help Rappahannock finish as strongly this season as it did in 1963.
But for one team member, a good showing this season also involves taking things easy.
“I have the right to take a day off,” said Dodson, who admits he sometimes cuts comers in practice runs with the team. Dodson—called the team clown by some of his fellow Panthers, explained: “I work real hard.”
