Atkins, a team member since his freshman year in 1981. “He’s a real good runner,” said Spieker. “He running strong right now. He should be our number one finisher.”
Atkins emphasizes the team’s situation this year:
“We’re all in the same boat,” he said. “If one of us messes up, you know then (a race) can be lost for us all.”
While Spieker said she isn’t yet sure who she expects to have as her remaining strong finishers, she mentioned four prospects—sophomores Todd Williams, John Dodson, Patrick Coffey and Johnathan Watson—as possibilities.
“They should take the place of those who graduated,” the coach said.
Another strong possibility is senior Ricky Shaw, also with the team since his freshman year. Spieker said she’d know more about her lineup by next week, when some players will have finished summer jobs and returned to school.
By that time, she added, team practices will include timed races and should be attended by “at least 20 boys and maybe five girls.” As of Tuesday, “13 or 14” cross country runners have been showing up at practices, which started last week.
