number of votes fighting to preserve religious freedom in this county. The angered men and women now include all sorts and degrees of people. This surely was demonstrated in the hearing on August 15 and will become more apparent with every hearing held in the months ahead as the citizens learn more about the contents of the proposed ordinance.
Mr. McNear, at the hearing, stated that one purpose of the proposed ordinance was to protect the more orthodox religions in their worship!
What a piece of effrontery was this! Does Mr. McNear have the Pope’s infallibility when he defines more orthodox or less orthodox religions?
Does he presume to rewrite the first amendment to the federal Constitution?
Allowing as much credit as I can for their good intentions, which they have piously proclaimed, my question must remain: Had these men no perception whatever of who our people are and what this county is before setting it on fire with their proposal?
I have little doubt that, in the end, some new zoning ordinance, significantly different from the present proposal, will be exacted by the supervisors. The question of how and by whom it will be administered then becomes—indeed already has become— the $64,000 question. No ordinance will work unless it is administered impartially, fairly, without personal vendettas and with sympathetic
