Suitable containers for hanging baskets include the popular openwork wire basket, plastic lattice-type baskets, clay and ceramic pots and wooden tubs. Containers may be fashioned at home if you desire.
The containers are suspended on a wire or chain. A variety of types and styles of containers for hanging baskets can be found in most nursery and garden catalogs. Whatever container is chosen, the basic preparation for planting is the same and is quite simple.
The baskets or containers are lined with coarse sphagnum or sheets of wood moss. The sphagnum should be thoroughly soaked in water and then pressed firmly to remove the excess water. This lining of moss will serve to retain the soil mixture and provide for good drainage of surplus water.
The basket is then filled to about one inch of the top with a soil mixture
