Will it help Baliles in the nominating process? Observers around the Capitol seem inclined to doubt it. Davis has already made heavy inroads into those groups whose members, earlier on, might have been swayed by the Baliles-Wilder alliance.
Also, coming as it does only a few weeks before the crucial caucuses, there is a certain transparency about it which is likely to be most obvious to those whom Baliles is trying to reach. To put it bluntly, he — or at least the committee — is attempting to use the inevitability of the Wilder candidacy to make a belated appeal to black, labor and liberal voters in order to shore up a candidacy which may be in deepening trouble. It is a move which might appear to the Democrats of all persuasions, as the saying goes, to be too clever by half.
How it all works out will not be clear until the caucuses, or perhaps until the convention in June.
But in the meantime Virginia politician-watchers will be observing with interest the political mating dance of the Commonwealth’s newest odd couple.
