In that same period, the number of game wardens has dropped, Warden Loving said.
"Before World War II, there were more wardens, the deer kill was under 5,000 and there were about 3.5 million people. Now, we’ve got a 90,000 deer kill with a population in Virginia of 5.5 million,” Mr. Loving said.
“And with a rising deer kill, complaints rise. The more public, the more complaints," said Phil.Parrish, a Fauquier warden.
The Virginia warden force currently numbers 136, down 11 from its previous quota. Eight positions were lost because of state agency manpower cutbacks imposed three years ago by Gov. Charles Robb. The other three positions are vacancies which should be filled this spring.
But the Virginia Wardens Association, which consists of 110 members or 85 percent of the warden force, wants a minimum of two wardens per county. That action would bring Virginia’s total to 190 wardens, not counting those in supervisory positions.
