Rappahannock’s varsity team advanced to the semi-finals of the Bull Run District Tournament by winning against Stonewall Jackson on Wednesday, February 27. The final score was Rappahannock 56, Stonewall 51.
“Both teams played well, and it was a back and forth game,” Coach Don Dawson said. At the end of the first quarter, Rappahannock had the lead 14-8, but at the half, Stonewall had gained the lead 27-24.
Rappahannock’s Robb Brown had scored 10 points in the first quarter, but injured his ankle halfway through the second. “That’s when we lost the lead because the team seemed to lose its enthusiasm after Robb got hurt,” Coach Dawson said.
H.B. Wood helped to keep the team in the game with six of six free throws in the second quarter, and Brown returned to the game in the second half. He went on to score a career high 20 points to become the lead scorer for the game.
“We started playing good defense in the third quarter,” Coach Dawson said. “Four and a half minutes into the third quarter we scored 19 straight points to regain the lead 45-35.”
Stonewall started cutting into the lead during the fourth quarter, and the score was tied a few times. In the last 40 seconds of the game, Tommy Jenkins hit four free throws. Jenkins had 14 points during the game and Jeff Portor ViuH 10
