In a letter distributed at the supervisors’ March 4 meeting, two citizens groups — the Rapp’k Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America and the Rapp’k League for Environmental Protection - urged the supervisors to hire a county administrator. Why?
Because they “are concerned that the government of the county be effectively managed and fully responsive to the county’s needs at a time when change, growth and development can reasonably be anticipated.”
The letter also asserts that a county administrator could assume the duties of the zoning administrator, and the combining of the two positions is often cited as one of the more attractive features to the creation of the new position.
One word of caution here. The two citizen groups and others concerned have pointed to the successful results of the administrator in Clarke County to argue for the hiring of one in Rappahannock.
What has to be kept in mind is that 1) Clarke has a fulltime zoning administrator (the two positions were not combined) 2) Clark^ ha§ a full-time financial officer* whgassists the county administrator and 3) Clarke has a full-time secretary to the administrator.
We point this out to make the comparison fair and to show that miracles did not come about in Clarke due to the hiring of one person.
With this in mind, we think the hiring of a county administrator is a good idea. Rappahannock needs one.
