The win advanced Rappahannock to the semi-final game against district leader Page County on March 1. Coach Dawson was pleased with the team’s level of play even though the final score was Rappahannock 59, Page 70.
“We led at the half 29-25, and in the second quarter the team played the best ball of the year,” Coach Dawson said. Rappahannock maintained its lead in the third quarter. “Then Page started hitting shots and getting the ball to Kerry Painter on the inside.”
Painter had 30 points during the game far Page, and has since been named the most valuable player in the district. “We really weren’t doing anything wrong, but Page was just playing better,” Coach Dawson said. “We didn’t make very many shots in the fourth quarter because we were taking forced shots because of the time.” The high scorer for Rappahannock was Tommy Jenkins with 19. Robb Brown had 14 and Jeff Porter had 12.
Coach Dawson said that he was pleased with the team’s effort, and that the season turned out as he had expected even though he “thought we might have won a few more games.” The varsity finished with an 8-8 record in the district and a 10-10 record overall.
“I have seen promising things for next year,” Coach Dawson said. The team will lose four seniors and two starters.
