For the 24th consecutive year, Mr. and Mrs. William Carrigan have invited the community to celebrate Independence Day at Avon Hall. Mr. Carrigan says a good program has been set up and that he hopes everyone will turn out to honor America’s great heritage.
The program will begin at 5:30 with footraces for children. Also at that time, weather permitting, Mike and Maria Kohler of Castleton will offer teat he red, hot-air balloon rides. The cost of rides will be $3 for children and $5 for adults. The agenda also includes a jousting tournament.
Prior to a grand display of fireworks, everybody will be expected to join in a massive chorale response to the Star-Spangled Banner.
Mr. Carrigan wrote the following statement:
Independence Day July 4th, 1985
If we could look in at the proceedings of the Continental Congress when they were discussing and deciding the articles to be incorporated in the Declaration of Independence approved on July 4,1776.
If we could understand the predicament of 13 independent colonies, with their own political outlooks and desire to be independent of each other, having to work together to destroy a burdensome enemy of all of them - If we could understand how much each had to give up in order to form a union for the common
good-and none of them having experience in this predicament.
Then too if we could understand that they hardly could have realized that these 13 colonies nestled on the eastern edge of a vast continent, not even knowing its borders or potential, was to be the keeper and developer of all this rich land for generations to
