come - including over 200 years later If we understood the task before these men, the Continental Congress, we would appreciate more the wisdom and God-given genius which came from their painful deliberations. England did the colonies a great service by forcing them to unite. The very vastness of the country, and its richness beyond dreams could not yet be realized. Land a plenty for everyone who claimed it - freedom to go to any part, any colony, to work at any kind of industry. The Continental Congress had to decide, what kind of government, what kind of country. What can we give the people Perhaps Benjamin Franklin, a very clear and practical thinker, gave some guidance to the Congress which will help our appreciation and understanding of our country, our responsibility to care for it during our short custodianship and perhaps pass it to the next generation a little better than what it was when we received it.
