Supervisor Gilkey said he favored the hiring of an administrator, arguing that it would benefit the county. “A lot of things come along we can’t keep up with. Gilkey added that the position should be fulltime.
During the discussion, Dick McNear was the only person mentioned as a prospective candidate for the job. Early on, though, his name was dismissed when the board realized that it stood little chance of luring McNear from his position in Fauquier. Still, he was mentioned several times as a model candidate because of his experience in planning and his avowed interest in Rappahannock County.
Regarding salary, the supervisors determined that, in order to attract a qualified candidate for the job, they would have to offer anywhere from $25,000 to $28,000 a year. Gilkey said the salary would be determined by the workload.
