Nationally, the peach crop has been cut 19 percent from last year to 2.2 billion pounds, or about 44 million bushels, with Western and Northern production areas being saved from problems because their trees develop much later.
Virginia's farmers are expected to harvest 9.61 million bushels of winter wheat from 310.000 acres, the smallest harvest in five years. The per-acre yield average of 31 bushels, once considered a good harvest but eclipsed in recent years, is the poorest in eight years, Mr. Riley said.
The 1985 national winter wheat crop forecast is 1.89 billion bushels, off 8 percent from last year's bumper harvest, the USDA has reported.
