Teachers Appointed
The Rappahannock County School Board accepted the resignation of Ellen Becker as an EMR-2 (special education) teacher during an executive session after its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 11.
The board also made six appointments for the 1985-86 school year. The appointments were: Jerry Compton as interim janitor at the high school, Michael Leonard as high school biology teacher, Peggy Yoder as high school math teacher, Tina Peterman as a third grade teacher, Joel Voorhees as high school physical education teacher and Jan Voorhees as speech therapist.
An update on legal matters was received by the board and no action was taken. The meeting adjourned at 12:45 a.m.
• Shotten Wins Fund Award
A trust fund for the benefit of Rappahannock County High School received notice last week from the Internal Revenue Service that it has qualified for tax exempt contributions. Virginia Beattie, speaking for the fund’s trustees, said gifts to the endowment would be gratefully received.
The trust was created last January by James J. Kilpatrick of Woodville, with an initial gift of $5,000. Other contributions came from Rowland Evans, James P. Jamieson, J. Clifford Miller, Arthur Arundel and from Op Ed, Inc., Kilpatrick’s corporation. Known formally as the “Rappahannock County High School Literary Fund,” the trust is intended to promote skills in composition and in reading. Under the charter, an annual award is to be given to the senior student, “regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, age, or family income,” who is adjudged by the English faculty to have demonstrated the greatest promise as a writer. This year’s $500 award from the fund was presented to Amy Shotten.
Income from the trust fund, after provision for the annual award, is to be devoted to the purchase of books, periodicals, and other library material. Beattie said the trustees hope to establish a principal of at least $10,000. The fund balance now stands at $6,000 after presentation of the award to Shotten.
The charter provides for three trustees: Beattie, M. Sean Kilpatrick and the principal of the high school ex officio.
• Amissville Ruritan Barbecue
Amissville Ruritans are anticipating the usual large crowd of diners at their 24th annual barbecue. The special pit cooked beef sirloin will be served at the Amissville Fire house on Route 211 on June 29.
An added attraction will be a hot air balloon demonstration. Weather permitting, Tad Loving of Culpeper, a member of the Balloon Federation of America, will be present with his crew.
Dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The price is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12 years old.
