Henry Neshem, president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, said the reduced crop is "bad news for those producers hit by bad weather or disease” but it will not have much effect on market prices, which remain below the cost of production.
Winter wheat is planted in the fall and harvested the following summer. It makes up about three-fourths of the total U.S. wheat supply.
The USDA projected total wheat production this year at about 2.44 billion bushels, including winter, spring and durum varieties.

Steve McGuire of Thomson McKinnon Securities Inc. here said the projected reduced wheat harvest moved prices slightly on Tuesday, but probably will not have much impact, largely because only 2.'3 billion bushels are needed to meet demand.
