By midnight, Gloria was 50 miles from the North Carolina coast and bearing down at 30 mph, carrying sustained winds of 130 mph, as her arms reached the Rappahannock County area, bringing with them dark clouds and a light rain.
By early Friday morning, the county got its only taste of the storm.
Breezy winds pulled leaves from their trees and a light rain fell before dawn.
But by lunchtime, the clouds had virtually disappeared and the sun evaporated all that was left of the surface water.
The only tell-tale sign of Gloria was a steady breeze.
