Mr. O’Brien, a House of Delegates member from Virginia Beach, leads:
• 33 percent to 30 percent in the Central Piedmont region (including Rappahannock, Fauquier and Culpeper counties).
• 38 to 32 in the Shenandoah region (including Clarke and Warren counties).
In Northern Virginia (including Loudoun, Prince William and Fairfax counties), the candidates are even at 33 percent apiece.
The poll also found the candidates running even at 32 percent in the Roanoke/Lynchburg region.
Miss Terry, a delegate from Patrick County, has an edge in Tidewater, Southside and Southwestern Virginia, while Mr. O’Brien also a has 36-33 lead in the Richmond Metro area, according to poll results.
Miss Terry’s support has increased slightly to 34 percent, from 31 percent in the June poll and 33 percent in July. Mr. O’Brien has drawn 32 percent in each of the three polls.
The September poll gives Mr. O’Brien the edge among men (38 percent to 30 percent) and among whites (35 to 28), while Miss Terry leads among women (38 to 27) and among blacks (57 to 19).
“The race for attorney general remains wide open,” Mason-Dixon analysts said. “The race is basically even in most of Virginia. Terry holds a 41 percent to 28 percent lead in Southside, which includes her home district. O’Brien runs well in his home of Virginia Beach, but his strength is offset by Terry’s support in Democratic Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Cheasapeake and Suffolk, so that he is denied a lead in his home region of Tidewater.
“O’Brien holds an edge in the more Republican-oriented Shenandoah region, and his strength in the suburban counties of Chesterfield, Hanover and Henrico enable him to have an advantage in the Richmond Metro area.”
