self to a religious life and I respond to that with an effort to do what she did: to imitate. The third section has a more creative response, where I offer an alternative to what is being presented and in the fourth, I take the letter and integrate it into my present life, as a working dancer.”
RAAC: How do you feel this piece is a step forward choreographically for you?
SN: “I feel that I have honed my craft. I’ve gone to a level of refinement... that is new. There’s intricacy and attention to detail as well as to the large aspects like the overall form. I don’t feel there’s a wasted motion throughout the piece. I took the time for as much editing and reworking as I really felt it needed. And yet, in completing it, I now see some incompleteness in it, and I realize that a performance always catches you in process. I find that humbling.”
